Lawn Maintenance Tips For Summer

With the first ‘official’ day of summer well and truly behind us, this is the time of year to really enjoy your lawn and the benefits of all your hard work in the previous months. The good news is that it will also require less maintenance during the warmer drier summer months, leaving you more time for relaxing, sunbathing and barbecues with the family! In this blog, we look at our best lawn maintenance tips for summer.

Lawns Need Water Too!

The most important thing you can do is give it a much-deserved drink. Make sure to water at times when the moisture is likely to soak in rather than evaporate, early morning or late evening is the best. Try to avoid giving your lawn a light sprinkling every day, as this can cause the roots to grow shallow and be prone to drying out. When it’s dry, a good soaking once or twice a week is much more beneficial for your lawn. It is natural for lawns to turn brown and straw coloured, but there’s no need to worry. Well-maintained lawns will invariably recover once the rain returns.

It’s worth noting that a well-fed and maintained lawn will have a stronger and deeper root system, enabling it to withstand and recover from long dry periods. Why not feed and water your lawn at the same time? Hose end feeders can help you apply a feed as you water. Alternatively, soluble feeds can be added to a watering can.

Mowing and Lawn Maintenance

In the hottest months of the year, your lawn is under stress. Stress from heat, stress from lack of water, stress from harsh sunlight, and, if you’re unlucky, stress from weeds and pests.

Although your lawn won’t grow as fast in the summer, it will still need some regular mowing to help keep it in top condition. Firstly, don’t cut too short. Longer grass helps keep the soil in the shade and decreases the amount of evaporation. It also makes your grass work harder to grow more, to make up for the haircut you’ve just given it!

Seeding and Repairing

Patchy lawns are no good for anyone. If you have patches of grass that just won’t fill themselves in, it might be up to you to do the job. The optimum time for seeding and repairing is spring or early autumn, but if you’re prepared to water diligently then it can still be done successfully in summer.
