What to do in the garden in April

Spring is here and that means one thing; more time in the garden! Although the risk of frost hasn’t yet passed (good old British weather) there are lots to be getting on with in the garden this month. Read on to find out what to do in the garden in April.

Give your garden a good clean up

Autumn and winter leave a lot of branches, dead leaves, and debris behind. Clear your garden, lawn and flower borders of any debris so that you can prepare for the planting season.

You may also want to get rid of old, growth of herbaceous perennials and deciduous grass this early spring. This is also the time to do a lot of weeding in your garden. You can read our previous blog full of top tips to weed successfully.

Once you are done removing weeds, winter mulches, and debris, you can start digging and preparing your garden for planting. Assuming that the soil is not too wet and difficult to work on.

If your garden is a little too overgrown and a simple clean up just will not do, we offer a garden clean up service here at Rosewood. Our professional and friendly team can get your garden ready for spring in no time!

Lawn edging

After cleaning up your garden and mowing your grass, it might be a good idea to do some lawn edging. This is the process of creating distinct lines that mark the edge of your lawn, and encouraging grass to stay within these lines by cutting and maintaining it. It helps to make your lawn look neat and gives your garden a tidier overall appearance.

Long-handled shears are great lawn edging tools and mean you can do the job standing up without having to bend. If this seems hard work or you have a lot of edging to do, you can find many powered line trimmers that have a head that will rotate 90° and can be used for edging. Most will have a roller or similar guide to ensure you cut in the right place and tidy up your lawn edges beautifully and quickly.

Prepare your soil

After clearing all the debris, nourish your soil with compost or well-rotted manure, if available. Layer 1-2 inches of compost on top of the soil and then turn it under to a depth of about 6 inches before you plant anything.

Compost is the greatest gift you can give to your soil! It replaces the nutrients that were lost from the previous growing season, improves the soil structure and creates a friendly habitat for beneficial insects and microorganisms.

It is important to replenish the soil with compost at the beginning of every growing season, at the very least. If you don’t yet have your own compost, you will want to find a quality source that is suitable for your garden.

Plant your spring annuals

Now is a great time to plant spring flower seedlings and young plants that you planted in March. If you’ve not sown seeds yet, it’s not too late to start them now! Petunias, zinnias, marigolds, purple coneflowers and any other gorgeous flowers you fancy adding to your flowerbeds. It might seem like a bit of work now, but you will definitely enjoy their blooming sights in the summer.
